How to Bend Garden Edging

Square garden beds, path edges and borders against a fence all need a sharp corner. With CoreEdge weathering steel edging, you can make one from a standard length: score it where you want the corner, then bend it. It takes a few minutes, and the two short videos below show you how.

What you’ll need

  • An angle grinder with a metal cutting disc
  • A vice, or a solid block of wood to lever against
  • Gloves, safety glasses and closed boots
  • A tape measure and a marker

How to bend garden edging, step by step

Step 1: Mark your corner

Measure along the length to where the corner falls, and mark a straight line from the top edge down to the base of the panel. Decide which way the edging needs to bend before you score, so the corner faces the right way.

Step 2: Score the line

Wearing your safety gear, run the angle grinder lightly along the line to make a shallow groove on the inside of the corner. You’re weakening the steel along the fold line, not cutting through it.

Step 3: Bend to 90°

Clamp the edging in a vice with the scored line level with the jaws, then push the free end over steadily until it reaches 90°. No vice? Brace the length against a solid block of wood along the scored line and use it for leverage.

Step 4: Install as normal

Click-lock the corner into your edging run and tap the spikes into the ground with a rubber mallet. Over time, the scored line weathers to match the rest of the edging.

Tips for a clean corner

Keep the score shallow. A deep cut can weaken the corner or snap it.
Bend in one smooth movement rather than working the steel back and forth.

Using black powder-coated edging?

You can score powder-coated edging, but cutting through the coating exposes the bare steel underneath. Use the appropriate paint to paint over the scoring. Alternatively, use our Corner Piece instead: it arrives flat and is designed to bend to the angle you need without damaging the finish.
